My
research explores the consequences of behavioral control in interracial
interactions for important outcomes such as people's memory for
information about others. Past research
has demonstrated that individuals who control their behaviors are less
successful at regulating subsequent behaviors (Richeson & Shelton,
2003). However, the extent to which
individuals control their behaviors is moderated by the source of their
motivation to respond without prejudice (Plant & Devine, 1998). Last year, our research confirmed a cycle of
prejudice and stereotyping which proposed that certain individuals are
motivated to control their behaviors, and this behavioral control then
resulted in these individuals remembering more stereotype-consistent
than stereotype-inconsistent information, following an interracial
interaction. This memory pattern may
perpetuate the cycle of needing to exercise control over behavior
because memory biases serve to reinforce a person's stereotypes.
This year, our research team will test a proposed
mechanism that may allow these individuals to escape the cycle of
prejudice. In addition, we will explore
some consequences that may be associated with an individual's
propensity to remember more stereotype-consistent than inconsistent
information. |
